Plans for a new 5G mast in Coventry are set to get the green light. Plans for the 15m-high mast on Quinton Road, Cheylesmore, have been recommended for approval despite a number of objections being received.

The plans will be discussed by Coventry City Council’s planning committee next week, August 31.

A report set to be put before councillors states that the proposal is ‘acceptable in principle’ and ‘will not adversely impact upon highway safety’. It adds that there will be a ‘minor impact on the visual amenity of the area, however the social and economic benefits outweigh any visual harm’.

The proposals are being put forward by Cignal Infrastructure UK Limited, which runs the Three network. They say the mast will provide improved coverage and capacity.

Six letters of objection were received by the council, raising concerns including health and safety and that the mast is ‘ugly’ and will have a detrimental visual impact on the area.

But the report states that the council must consider that ‘advanced, high quality and reliable communications infrastructure is essential for economic growth and social well-being’. It adds that alternative sites are unavailable and the Quinton Road plan is the ‘only viable option’.

“The site location is located on a main road adjacent and opposite commercial properties,” it adds. “The surrounding area south of the railway bridge is characterised by residential streets with limited opportunity to locate a mast without being closer to residential properties.”

The plan is recommended for approval with conditions. The planning committee will make a final decision when it meets next week.
