Ran for it: A Bergholz man said a man with whom he’s had ongoing issues took several shots at him at the intersection of state Route 544 and township Road 278, Thursday. He said a car had pulled up alongside his tractor earlier but he ignored it, telling deputies just before he reached township Road 278 the man jumped out from behind a pole and fired at him. He said he jumped off his tractor and ran across Route 524 and “hid in a ditch for hours” before going to a family member’s house to call for help.

In custody: Two people were taken into custody after a traffic stop on county Road 39, Bloomingdale, Friday. The driver, Deidre M. Hunter, 39, of Salineville was turned over to Columbiana County sheriff’s deputies on an outstanding warrant and was cited for driving left of center, deputies said. Her passenger, Lawrence S. Van Kirk, 39, of 59 Della Drive, Bloomingdale, was charged with three counts of possession of drugs after deputies allegedly discovered two bags of psychodelic mushrooms in his possession, along with a couple lorazepam and acetaminophen oxycodone hydrochloride tablets, both of them controlled substances.

Injured: An individual riding a dirt bike lost control and struck a parked vehicle in the 100 block of Steubenville Street, Bloomingdale, Thursday. Deputies said the bumper on the passenger side was dislodged and the dirt bike rider needed medical attention for a deep laceration.

Plugged in: A Market Street resident told police she thought her neighbor was unplugging her oxygen machine, Thursday. Police said she had it plugged into a wall outlet because her electric was shut off. They couldn’t make contact with the neighbor, but the machine was plugged back in and she was told to talk to management.

Can’t resist: A city resident who’d been banned from an apartment in the 100 block of North Fourth Street told police he went there to talk with a female, but they started arguing, Thursday. Austin Hoose, 27, 180 North Fourth Street, Apt. 505, was charged with violating a protection order. Police said he told them he “was aware of the protection order and should not have been around her.”

Theft charged: Wal-Mart employees told police a woman tried to leave the store with more than $162 in merchandise she hadn’t paid for, Thursday. Police allege surveillance footage showed Vanness N. Rose, 36, 992 Sherman Ave., Steubenville, stepping between two aisles and bagging items without paying for them. They said she made it to the door before employees intercepted her, so she dropped the items and fled on foot with a child. Rose was issued a summons for petit theft, police said.

No return: A downtown resident said she let her son use her car to go to work but he hasn’t returned it, Thursday. She said he’s had her car for two days and when she’s tried to contact him he hasn’t answered.

Hoodwinked: A Salem resident said she purchased a wooden table and chairs from a city resident, but she hasn’t heard from him since she gave him a $1,060 downpayment, Thursday.

Light-fingered: A Park Street resident said a man she knows stole $21 that she’d left on her table, Thursday. Police were unable to locate him.

Troubled by children: Police were told juveniles are causing problems on Oregon Avenue, “swearing and talking inappropriately as well as sitting on people’s cars and talking disrespectfully,” Thursday.

Causing problems: A Ridge Avenue resident told police a woman known to her and an unknown male have “been in the alley and on her property … harassing her,” Thursday. She said it’s happening several times a night.

Booked: George Cartia, 52, 947 Sherman Ave., Steubenville, warrant for contempt of court, Thursday; Richard H. Carter, 51, 8417 county Road 22A, Bloomingdale, warrant out of municipal court for felony theft, Thursday; Vernon M. Smith, 40, 965 Rinker Road, Steubenville, failure to appear for arraignment, Thursday.
