Last Thursday, when the latest heat dome was in full force, Columbia’s electric utility set a new all-time peak. But my house was not part of it.

Even though the peak hour occurred between 4 and 5 p.m when the sunlight was already declining, my solar panels were still able to handle all our household needs, and even supply some power back to the grid. This was a big win for my wife and me. We have worked on our 70-year-old house for almost 10 years to bring it to net zero, where we produce as much solar energy as we consume in a year’s time.
